El objetivo de esta valiosa monografía sería responder a la pregunta de si las jarchas de la serie romance pueden ser consideradas testimonios auténticos de una lírica temprana románica. Para ello, el autor analiza los orígenes y la retórica de la moaxaja hispano-árabe, así como el desarrollo de la poesía estrófica andalusí, sus paralelos con las tradiciones europeas, cuestiones de prosodia, rima, núcleos temáticos y estilo. La elocuente conclusión final es la siguiente: «From the literary point of view our Romance kharjas have not been composed at the crossroads of two systems, but completely according to Arabic Tradition: historically, prosodically, thematically and stylistically. In the Romance and bilingual kharjas some non-Arabic material was sporadically incorporated, but Andalusi poets did not base their muwassahat upon them» (p. 294)
